These tools are able to write code and make decisions in a way that is similar to a human programmer, leading some to worry that they may become a threat to employment in the tech industry.
The purpose of this post is not really to explore the question of chatbots taking the jobs of software engineers. Here, we are will instead attempt to examine chatGPT's ability to engineer software in a way that is as objective as possible. That being said, this is a hot topic right now. It seems like we've seen the general consensus among software engineers go from "yes" to "no" and then "maybe".

Note: There is a lot of debate surrounding the meaning and nature of "understanding" something in the context of machine learning. This is a largely philosophical issue and it will not be discussed here. For the purposes of this post, we will be assuming a very superficial meaning of the word to keep the conversion moving.

That's right! So let's throw it a curve-ball. This JS code can calculate the return value for an input of 11 just fine, but what the code can not do is deal with VERY large numbers. Numbers like the output of n=111

. Programming langues like JS and C just simply can't deal with numbers that large out of the box. Let's see how chatGTP would handling being asked about an input of n=111

So far so good. But I had another idea of how we might confuse it. We've been talking about both C code and JS code at this point. While chatGPT does understand that JS code does not have int and float types and does not differentiate between the two, I think we might be able to confuse it by asking for the output of n=3.14
considering the original JS code.
Note: 3.14 was just a randomly picked "float" value. Any fractional number would have worked just as well.
If you pass the value 3.14 as the input to the 'fib' function in the original JavaScript code, the result would be an error because the input must be an integer.

The results might be unexpected and unintended behavior but no error message is throw. That being said, I will admit the code which check for an integer input is possibly a little better for use in a "production" environment.
I told chatGPT "Javascript has no integer type. The original javascript code would not throw an error if we used a float as input.". This is how it responded:

So we've seen that chatGPT can do a reasonably good job at understanding and explaining code. As long as the human operator is something of a domain expert themselves and can "call BS" when chatGPT is giving output that is incorrect.
What people seem to really be wondering about though, is if chatGPT and tools like it are able to generate original code from scratch.
Note: Similar to the meaning of "understanding" the meanings of the words "original" and from "scratch" are also to be taken in the most superficial way possible.
Let's try a really simple test and ask chatGTP just to write a "Hello World" program in C. This was the output:

I felt the need to clarify that it did understand that the code it output the second time was not valid C code. I asked it if the second example would work as C code or only as C++. This was the response:
